myID (formerly known as MyGovID) is an Australian Government Digital ID app.

It’s an easy and secure way to prove who you are online so you can sign in to a range of government services like myGov, Centrelink, Australian Business Register (ABR) and more.

It creates, maintains and manages information about your identity in one place which saves you the trouble of updating your information for each government service.

What is the difference between myID and myGov?

myID and your myGov account are different.

In one location, with a single login and password, myGov is the entry point to a range of online government services for individuals (not businesses), including Medicare, myTax, and Centrelink.

On the other hand, myID is like having a distinct digital identity for yourself. It allows you to access government services online by setting up one digital persona that may be used with various services. This lets you complete everything online without a phone call to the tax office.

Do I need a myID?

Yes, you will need a myID if you want to access government services.

If you are a business owner or company director with a Directors ID, then you’ll already have a myID as this is part of the Directors ID setup process.

How to set up a myID

  1. Download the myID app to your smartphone from either the Apple Store or Google Play.
  2. Follow the prompts to set up and verify your identity. It is important you use your personal email address, not a shared business email.
  3. There are 3 levels of identity strengths; Basic, Standard and Strong, with Strong offering the most trust and more access to services. The Strong identity requires verification of all your identity documents (eg. Medicare, Australian Drivers Licence, passport) and a face verification to be checked against your government records.

myID for individuals

myID can be linked with a range of personal services that are currently accessed through the standard myGov. At this stage, the following services can be linked and accessed for individuals through myID:

  • Easily log in to myGov using the myID app
  • Access Centrelink
  • Apply for a Tax File Number (TFN)
  • Apply for a Unique Student Identifier (USI)

myID for business

myID is a handy access point for accessing online government services for your business or on behalf of a business you’re associated with.

With myID you can access the following government services for your business, and more:

  • Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM)
  • Australian Business Register (ABR)
  • Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) online
  • Business Registration Service
  • Employer Support Payment Scheme
  • Online services for business
  • Payroll Tax (PTX) Express
  • Workforce Australia Online for Businesses

For a complete list of the government services available, check out myID’s list of services.

myID and Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM)

To access most online services on behalf of your business, your myID must be linked to the Australian Business Number (ABN) in Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM).

RAM is a management tool to allow other people to act on behalf of your business across government services. This allows you to invite team members to your businesses services and give them permissions to access what you need them to.
